Da Costa Reserve Review: An Adelaide Mum’s Take on an Inclusive Family-Friendly Playground in Glenelg East

If you’re on the lookout for a truly family-friendly or inclusive playground in Adelaide, here’s my honest mum's review of Da Costa Reserve in Glenelg East. We've had a few play dates here over the past couple of years and I want to share the genuine details, both the wins and the not-so-great bits—so you know exactly what to expect.

The Essentials

Fully Fenced – Always a Win! The playground is completely enclosed, which gives you the peace of mind you need while your little ones explore and play safely.

Limited Shade – Sun Smart Planning Needed The play area itself is mostly open with only a few trees scattered around. That said, there is a nicely shaded seating area close to the toilets, and a BBQ area nearby for those moments when you need a break or a bite to eat.

Accessibility – Not Designed for Mobility Aids Inside the playground, the surfaces are mainly natural bark and grass with no paved paths. The concrete paths only extend up to the playground gate, so it’s simply not accessible for wheelchair users or anyone needing mobility aids.

Toilets Onsite – Convenient, Although Just Outside the Gate There are toilets available within the reserve, conveniently located just outside the fenced play area. While it works fine for most families, it’s worth noting if you need everything immediately at hand.

Parking – Ample and Well-Positioned The reserve is set in a triangular space nestled between three suburban streets, meaning you’ll find plenty of street parking without the hassle of busy main roads.

A Day Out at Da Costa Reserve

There’s plenty of room for the kids to run around, and the variety of play equipment really keeps the day interesting. I’ve seen our little ones—and our friends’ kids—making the most of everything this playground has to offer.

Personal Highlights

  • Lighthouse Beach Theme Fun: One visit featured a fun lighthouse beach theme that was a huge hit with Mr 5, while our friends’ children absolutely loved the sandpit and digger.

  • The Spinner Swing: There’s a standout swing here—a unique design with a single pole that rises from the centre, arches over, and comes down with spinning seats. It was a favourite with the kids, perfect for teaching turn-taking and offering a thrilling ride.

  • Open Space & Basketball Court: The playground boasts lots of open space for running around. There’s even a one-third basketball court that backs onto the playground (although it’s outside the fenced area), providing even more ways for the kids to burn off energy.

Final Thoughts

Da Costa Reserve is a secure and fun playground that many families in Adelaide will appreciate. It ticks the key boxes with a fully fenced play area, ample parking, and a variety of engaging equipment. However, if accessibility is a top concern, it’s important to note that the natural, unpaved surfaces mean the playground isn’t suited for those who rely on mobility aids.

At Inclusive Kids Guide, I’m committed to sharing honest, no-nonsense details and personal experiences to help you plan your family outings with confidence. I hope my review gives you a clear picture of what to expect at Da Costa Reserve—a genuine family-friendly playground for kids in Adelaide.
